History Notes

From "Oh-ver" : history of the Brisbane River cross river ferries / by Percy Hanlon, with sources including Minutes of the Marine Board of Queensland.

Tenders received on 2nd June 1914 for ferry 29' x 9'8" - E. Beattie £100; A. Whearet £99/10/6; N. Wright £98; C. Gaskin £95. Tender N. Wright accepted Ellen registered 25th November 1914.

Likely named after daughter of Joshua Charles Webb (lessee of Apollo Ferry since 1894).

In 1918 and 1919 Ellen operating in Balmoral Shire.

In 1922 Minutes note "Ellen is fitted with Parsons engine obsolete".

1923 - "Ellen to Hawthorne"

Dec 1923 - "Ellen gets new engine. C.C.M. (Canandian Cycle Motor) agent for American Palmer Engine.

Running hours noted for year ending Dec 1930: 2866hrs (of which 2690hrs at Norman Park).

In 1943 "Ellen" was based at Norman Park. Retired from service 27th November 1943.
